Foreign media's impression of Rome

posted by Giorgio in: City Life in Italy Rome

quotidiano

Writer James Joyce did not love Rome which he used to describe as a man who lives by exhibiting to travellers his grandmother’s corpse, but years have passed since those days and now foreign magazines and newspapers tend to praise Rome to the sky, though sometimes they do lament inefficiency in local government . Now going back to the praise, I have recently read two interesting and very enthusiastic articles about Rome; one by Keith Miller for the Telegraph and the other by Tom Fort! Both seem to see Rome as one of the best places where to live! The only sore point, according to these articles, is the Circus Maximum which people should avoid - too many bikers, joggers and wide boys!

spa

Laura Elos and the Carlton Hotel Baglioni in Milano have announced the opening of a new spa called Spiga 8 in one of the most elegant districts in the city; located on the famous Della Spiga street in Milan’s fashion district, the new spa has been designed for those who, though always in a hurry, wish to indulge in only the very best. Once there, guests will be able to relax, have a cup or two of herbal tea in an elegantly furnished lounge (illuminated by candle light) and then choose from an extensive range of spa treatments. An expensive posh spa where posh people with no time to lose can relax and enjoy the pleasures of life for an hour or two.

Happy Hour in Italy: bars, buffets and cocktails

posted by Alison in: City Life in Italy Rome Milan Bars/Pubs Living in Italy

Buffet All you can eat buffet and Happy Hour in Italy is the best! You can try Italian cocktails or a nice prosecco, paying a bit more for the drink and enjoying the Italian snacks available for free at the bar. Just a little advice for living in Italy.

For Italian cocktails, try a negroni, aperol spritz, americano, bellini or rossini, or get some advice on the Italian wine available by the glass. Go with white wine - only ignorant people wanting to show off go for red.

And when we say snacks, we don’t mean picky finger food. We’re talking a smorgasboard of mega pasta salads, hot pasta dishes, savoury pastries galore, chillies stuffed with ricotta, various parmesan cheese platters, more prosciutto than one pig could provide etc etc.

DO NOT MISS OUT ON HAPPY HOUR. But bear in mind our advice on drinking in Italy. Check out the bars in Milan, Rome and towns all over the country between 6 and 8pm.

Italy's most popular churches

posted by Alison in: City Life in Italy Art/design

Travel portal Trivago, for the Church month of May, has published the most appreciated basilicas, cathedrals and churches in Italy. The top ten churches of Italy are based on the number of internet searches completed in March and April of this year on the Trivago site.

To test your knowledge of Italian churches, we’ve put up the photos of the top ten, most of which are so well known, you shouldn’t have any problems identifying them. The “solution” is after the jump.

All photos from Flickr, from Allie_Caulfield, Mypoorbrain, freshwater2006, Bruce_of_Oz, barb_ar, Roby Ferrari and Wiki Commons.

The most dangerous jobs in Italy: taxi driver in Palermo

posted by Giorgio in: Sicily City Life in Italy

If you need to take a taxi in Italy you will probably be picked up by a Fiat Multipla; these cars are all the rage with taxi drivers here n Italy, maybe this preference depends on the fact that this car has 3 seats in front and 3 in rear! Anyway traffic in Italy can be really really chaotic; the above video shows a poor taxi driver in a bus lane trying to avoid a collision with cars driving on the wrong side of the road. Impossible to keep one’s cool; many four-letter words were flung and names called! Any comments?
