If your are in Rome and haven’t decide yet what to do on New Year’s Eve, don’t worry the Eternal city has plenty to offer; from the classical music concert in piazza del Quirinale to the concert which Italian singer Claudio Baglioni will hold in the Imperial Forums, near the Colosseum. But if you don’t like Claudio Baglioni, well, you can always opt for another famous Italian singer, Antonello Venditti or go to the Rome Gospel Festival which has a really interesting programme this year. In addition to all this, poetry lovers will be glad to know that the poems of Gioachino Belli - set to music by Rossini - can be enjoyed at the Theatre of Tor Bella Monaca for a romantic evening devoted to poetry and music. By the way, on New Year’s eve night there will be a 24-hour subway service, so this time you can leave your car home!

The Vogue Fashion’s Night Out in Milan, one of the world’s most famous cities for its fashion, takes place this evening in Milan, one night before the New York Vogue Night Out. The city will be focusing on high fashion tonight as international and Italian fashion brands, both boutique and street style, open their doors for a shopping experience that includes music, parades, aperitifs and new business opportunities.
Shops will be open until late in the main shopping areas of Milan including Corso Venezia, the area around the Duomo and Montenapoleone, Piazza san Babila and many others. Following a champagne and fashion parade course, the more ‘democratic’ areas of shopping in Milan, via Brera and corso Garibaldi, are also putting on events with jazz music, wine tastings and a manga Japanese parade in Garibaldi.
Dolce and Gabbana are celebrating along the via della Spiga with a mini-circus. Prada will be offering champagne to everyone and Antonio Marras will personalise the Stella McCartney lingerie in via Santo Spirito. Along the Vittorio Emanuele street the Italian lingerie brand of Intimissimi will be autographed by actor Luca Argentero and new model Irina Shayk. Re Giorgio in Montenapo will put a Campari bar together and will present the new “Shopping Bag”. See all the events here.
With summer just around the corner, Rome is preparing to welcome tourists with a spectacularly rich programme and a series of events such as Lungo il Tevere di Roma 2010 which, as you can imagine for yourself, revolves around the Tiber River and its nightlife. During the summer month, the river, called after King Tiber, turns into a play ground for adults with concerts, exhibitions, bars and thousands of street vendors selling typical products of the region. Another important fun spot is the area around Ponte Milvio, especially from 27 May to 8 August when every year the place is turned into a mall with shops, wine bars and restaurants.

An interesting event called Rit o’Castidd (which in the local vernacular means behind the castle) will soon take place in the small town of Putignano, near Bari. Located just behind the Church of Saint Peter and the Balì Palace, the castle was built on the highest point in town. With this important event, the cultural association Trullando hopes to bring new life and interest to this appealing but often forgotten place which sadly today’s generation has tended to neglect in favour of far more fashionable spots. On 14 March from 18:00 to 24:00 makeshift kitchens will be set up along via Minzele, via Porticella, via Castello, via Palmento and via Ortenzio offering visitors delicious snacks from the traditional Putignano cuisine and superb wine from local winemakers! Artists and skilled artisans will also be there exhibiting their fine creations and products. In order to create an original atmosphere the organisers will also set up an old brothel (a theatrical one of course). But the surprises do not end there; at around 3:00 p.m. maps will be distributed and those of you with a passion for “ orienteering” will have the opportunity to explore the secret heart of Putignano. Altogether an exciting time is to be had by all so don’t forget to mark your calendar

On New Year ‘s eve, more than 30,000 people gathered in Piazza san Marco to celebrate and this despite high water and foul weather. Now we all look forward to the Venice Carnival which will start with a spectacular show on February 6th . But one of the chief attractions of this much awaited event will undoubtedly be the Flight of the Angel which will take place on February 7th. The Carnevale programme also includes a drag queen beauty pageant on February 12 (Piazza san Marco), commedia dell’arte plays and exciting tango nights ( from February 13th to 15th). But the main Mardi Gras party will take place in Piazza San Marco on February 16th (i.e. the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday), which is the last day of Carnevale!

If you’re spending New Year’s Eve in Rome it’s unlikely you’ll be thinking about the ancient traditions of celebrating a new calendar year. But for the record, the tradition of celebrating New Year’s Eve on December 31st, and starting a fresh year on January 1st, began with the Julian Calendar of 46 BC.
Like every year, New Year’s Eve in Rome is a special time to celebrate one of the western world’s great events in a European capital. After Christmas celebrations in Italy, for the night of San Silvestro, there will be parties in the squares, concerts, fireworks and plenty of food. To get to where the action is, try the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza del Campidoglio for live concerts, while fireworks will take place in the Trastevere district and from Castel Sant Angelo.
A great panoramic spot in the city where you can watch all the fireworks and pyrotechnics display is at Terrazza del Pincio Montemario, or find a friend with an attic apartment and you’re set. The Piazza del Quirinale will host its traditional classical music concert in the presence of Italian President, Giorgio Napolitano, and Italian politicians.
On the practical side of things, Rome’s metro system will run late into the night to accommodate those who will visit the late night opening museums, theatres, rock concerts and symphony concerts. Stay tuned for information on disco events and VIP locations, and for more details on December events in Rome, see the Rome events site at 06068.it
