Carnival in Val d'Aosta

Arco di Augusto, AostaAccording to Il sole 24 ore, the most prestigious daily business newspaper in Italy, Aosta is Italy’s best city for quality of life. But we don’t want to talk about that. We are here to talk about something far more pleasant: the famous Carnevale or Carnival which will take place from 24th to 25th January. The event called A la decouverte des Carnavals de Montagne is particularly enjoyed by the locals who, wearing their beautiful masks, parade through the Coumba Fredia or Cold Valley. This year they will sport Napoleonic uniforms (a reminder of when the great general with his valiant soldiers camped in the valley). But of course there will be many, many other attractions such as the famous Bouffon; a well known mask that represents Verdigne and the region around Courmayeur. Apart from the Carnival, Aosta has a lot to offer; its cuisine, for instance, which, trust me, is really superb!

By the way, just a few days ago I came across a rather interesting offer which includes two nights’ accommodation in a beautiful farmhouse in Nous not far from Aosta; on your arrival you will be welcomed with a romantic candle lit dinner (a roaring fire will also be lit to create the right atmosphere ); the second day will start off with a scrumptious breakfast and at the end of your two-day stay a sumptuous dinner with Val d’Aosta’s most typical dishes will be served! Simply irresistible!
