While Eurochocolate was probably the ultimate destination for chocoholics in Italy, other gems around the country can be discovered, including in Rome. The chocolate factory in Rome was established in 1923 and is called Said. It is located in via Tiburtina in the San Lorenzo area of the city.

You enter the factory through a small door, which is almost hidden, and much like Charlie and the Chocolate factory, you then enter a world of chocolate. Glass cabinets and trays everywhere house pralines, sugared almonds, biscuits, cakes and chocolate blocks.

The Italian chocolate factory is fitted with tables and armchairs where you can taste an excellent hot chocolate, or tea, with anything chocolately your heart desires. Italian hot chocolate is a true connoisseurs drink and this is perfect - lovely and thick but not too sweet (though if you’re used to Ciobar or Eraclea you might like to add a little sugar).

The only downside here is that you pay for the quality of a hot chocolate made on the premises from the factory’s produce. One drink will set you back about six euros while a portion of biscuits or fresh ricotta praline costs about five euros. They are not stingy in their servings though, with the hot chocolate served in a large cup.

If you’re looking for a St Valentine’s gift from Rome, there are blocks of chocolate available with “I love you” and other similar phrases written. They come in a heart shape and are an alternative to the traditional Italian Baci Perugina chocolate for Valentine’s Day.
