Country home for accommodation in Chianti: agriturismo in Tuscany

By Alison

gds

If you’re looking for a private and secluded farm stay in Chianti, Tuscany, with a touch of exclusivity given the small number of guests that can stay there, Leccio agriturismo is for you. It’s located a few kilometres from Florence in the Chianti Classico region.

The beautiful farm building is an 18th century villa with a property that extends into the Ugolino golf course. The old building has features such as fireplaces and a rustic atmosphere from times ago. There is a swimming pool with views over the Tuscan countryside, but the best thing is the cooking.

Leccio agriturismo has two enormous kitchens in which host, Marialuisa Landi, prepares the kind of banquets that haven’t been seen for many a year. It’s worth a stop to take same time out in a kind of sabbatical in Tuscany, so look at the Leccio website for more information.

Most beautiful places in the world to live: Gaiole in Chianti tops idyllic locations list by Forbes

By Alison

A small town in Tuscany of just 2,600 inhabitants, has topped Forbes’ list of the most idyllic places to live. Gaiole in Chianti is at the top of a ranking of possible real estate in Italy, and Europe, ahead of towns and cities such as Saint Remy de Provence, Copenhagen, Kefalonia, Lubjana, Burford, Budapest, Sibiu in Romania, Rome, e Deia on the island of Maiorca.

History says that the town of Gaiole in Chianti was already around before the 11th century. By 1215 it had become a centre of commerce in the surrounding valley, with a market square. In 1300 it became part of the constitution of the Chianti League, with Gaiole becoming a small capital, together with Castellina and Radda.

Forbes believes that Gaiole would be an exceptional place to live, saying “it is now a sleepy and picturesque municipality. It holds an annual wine festival in September and has an average temperature of 68º F (20º C). A 17th century farmhouse high in the Chianti hills is likely to cost around 600,000 euros”. With hilly countryside, nature, wine and history, there is much to explore, including the Abbazia di Coltibuono in the photo.

Italian words in English: the meaning of fiasco

By Alison

chianti fiasco The word of the day in our learning Italian post today is “fiasco”. In Italy, the word “fiasco” generally means a spectacular flop for any performance in theatre or television. In English we often use it to mean a dramatic mess-up, failure or complete incompetence. But where does the word fiasco actually come from?

The fiasco was the traditional bottle in which Chianti was served, that you will often now see in old Italian trattorias for decoration; they had a straw basket around the base of the squat bottle. It was used from about 1300 until the advent of the more modern and hygienic glass bottle.

The meaning of the phrase “far fiasco” or to create a flop, is uncertain. It seems that Domenico Biancolelli, noted “Arlecchino” or harlequin in the 1600’s had a grand flop on stage with a fiasco as a prop, that he then threw away, saying “it’s your fault if they don’t laugh”.

The hamlet is called Monastero dell’Ombrone and is situated about 23 kilometres from Siena in the Valle dell’Ombrone. The area is known for its beautiful landscape, amongst the vineyards of Chianti, with hillsides covered in wheat, chestnut forests and cypress walks.

The Tuscan country resort offers 74 suites, a villa, a spa, three swimming pools and a restaurant all in four hectares of green space.
