Italy’s Lake Como is a magnificent sight to see in northern Italy, and in my opinion, should not be missed if you’re anywhere in Lombardy. The Como side of the lake has many features including Italian villas, the towns of Cernobbio and Bellagio and other natural beauties.
On the other side of the lake is Varenna, a boutique town known as the Pearl of the Lake in times gone by, and marking the start of the beautiful Valtellina valley is the town of Colico. Off the beaten track, hiking and trekking in this area will take you to the Italian fort of Forte di Montecchio or Forte dei Lusardi.
The fort was built between 1911 and 1914 and was constructed as the “Linea Cadorna” for the northern front. The fort was never subject to attacks from the Austrian forces and has since remained largely intact (with fully functioning canons still today).
