The late Enzo Ferrari used to call the Mille Miglia the most beautiful race in the world and he was absolutely right! Every year the Mille Miglia attracts thousands of people from all over the world including such celebrities as Nick Mason (drummer for Pink Floyd) and Jay Kay, a member of Jamiroquai. It’s of course impossible to recall all the anecdotes which have over the years made this race really unique.

The 82nd edition of the Mille Miglia commences today, running until May 17th, with a five-day program that promises plenty of excitement. The elegant event brings back the days of when the “signori” would travel with their full outfit of driving kit.
The Mille Miglia event starts from Brescia with the opening of the sponsors village in Piazza della Loggia, while the race commences the following day, heading for Ferrara where the first vehicles will arrive about midnight. The day after is a long day, starting at 7:45 am to make for Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, with arrival expected about 8:30 pm. On Saturday 16th the longest day occurs from Rome back to Brescia starting at 6:30 am, that should finish at about 2am on the Sunday, though the first vehicles are expected to arrive at about 10:30 pm.
Enzo Ferrari described the Mille Miglia as the “Most beautiful road race in the world”, and the new organisers are certainly looking to create something unforgettable. Doing 1000 miles is still an iconic experience that draws on a tradition the 6,000 participants are keen to be involved in. It promises to be a spectacle. Modena will soon host the 10th edition of the “Modena Terra di Motori” exhibition. The show includes vintage cars and historic models displayed through the streets and squares of the town, with a particular focus on the tradition of “gran turismo” in Italy. Modern examples of legendary cars are also on display.
The exhibition is in collaboration with “Assomotoracing” and the Italian Automobile Club of Modena. The program starts on April 19, with a special exhibition dedicated to racer Tazio Nuvolari, with various trophies, photos and sports memorabilia on display. There is also plenty of motor racing memorabilia from Italy to see, along with the historic exhibition of “1908-1948. 40 years of automobiles”.
Only a couple of days are left before the 92nd Targa Florio Rally which, with a different formula, follows the tradition of a challenge that has left its mark in the history of motoring. For fans the greatest years were those of the romantic epoch when, in Sicily, the greatest drivers would confront each other at the wheels of the most beautiful racing cars. The turbulant emotions of those years have a plce in the heart of any sportsman, gaining a place in eternity.
Starting in 1906 after a bet from Vincenzo Florio, son of Ignatius and decendant of one of the wealthiest Sicilian families, the Targa Florio is the oldest car race on the road. It soon distinguished itself for its selection and the notable work required of the racers, who with an adventurous spirit, soon gave themselves to the challenge. It has been one of the hardest and most fascinating competitions of all time. Drivers who have raced in both the 1000 miles and the Targa Florio confirm that winning in Brescia requires physique and the right car, while winning in Sicily you also need a heavy foot.
