Pato dedicates goals to Barbara Berlusconi in AC Milan derby victory

By Alison

The Milan local football derby on Saturday night saw AC Milan and FC Internazionale battle in a match that will likely mark the eventual winning championship team. AC Milan won 3-0, punishing FC Inter’s bad defence and tentative play. Current AC Milan favourite on the Italian football scene, Alexandre Pato, scored two of those three goals, apparently dedicating them to his new girlfriend, Barbara Berlusconi, who is also vice president of the club.

Berlusconi (the daughter, not Silvio), watched from the stands as Pato scored, and seemed pleased but composed. In the post-match press conference, the media asked what Pato’s gesture of grabbing his shirt around the heart meant. The diplomacy we talked about yesterday was needed as Pato was asked who he dedicated the goals to.

He says:

“To all our fans, especially those who have always come to the stadium even when things don’t go so well.”

But the journalists were obviously not content to leave it there, asking if the goals weren’t dedicated to someone special, close to him at the moment. And Pato tries answering:

Italian vs English football: Mario Balotelli, red cards and local derbies

By Alison

Balotelli red card

Currently one of Italy’s most controversial exports, Mario Balotelli is showing his brilliance at Manchester City with two goals in his last match, handing the troubled team and its coach, Roberto Mancini, a win. Balotelli also got himself a red card and a three match suspension in the meantime, seemingly proving that everytime he scores a goal, he’ll have to spend some time on the bench, too.

Balotelli will skip his local Manchester derby today because of the suspension, and no doubt he will also be watching the fortunes of his old team, FC Internazionale, at it faces its own derby with AC Milan this weekend. The parallel stories are keeping many Italians highly interested and amused.

On the one hand, our Italians overseas - Balotelli and Mancini - are showing their genius and weaknesses at various intervals as Mancini battles to keep a job after leaving FC Inter in controversial circumstances to move to England’s premier league; and Balotelli needing to justify the expenditure on him despite having spent a large part of the opening of the season on the bench (among some off-field antics that no good footballer would pass up these days).

In the meantime back at Italian football, the ex-club of our expatriates has plenty of work to do after an unbelievable season last year in which they won everything there was to be won, has since turned into a scrappy start to 2010 with bad performances, injuries and a general lack of inspiration. So far we think Balotelli and Mancini will come off better than Inter in the end, but there’s a long way to go yet.

Italians overseas: Mancini dead man walking

By Alison

Mancini British press

Roberto Mancini has gone from coaching the successful Italian football team of FC Internazionale to a tough time over at Manchester City. The British press has never been particularly tender with Mancini but after City’s loss to Wolverhampton, things got spicier than usual. While the team is still in fourth place, Britain’s tabloid The Sun has claimed that Mancini is losing control over his players.

The Italian coach for his part, claims that the players are still behind him but between Mancini and Fabio Capello, Italian football coaches haven’t been enjoying good press this year. With an expensive acquisition like Mario Balotelli on the bench for the first part of the season, and eight points behind championship leader, The Sun asked:

Many of City’s multi-millionaire under- achievers believe they will never challenge for the Premier League title with the Italian in charge. And SunSport has been told some are guessing among themselves when Mancini - whose side are fourth in the Premier League, eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea - could be sacked.

Would there be a welcome home for Mancini in Italy’s Serie A football? Certainly not from Inter who had a cracking season last year with Mourinho and mixed results so far this year with Benitez, but where would an out-of-work Italian football coach go if he had to…?

Mario Balotelli on the bench in a shower cap as AC Milan loses big time

By Alison

Italian footballer and new Manchester City player Mario Balotelli has been enjoying himself in hospital, but now comes the bad news that he could be out for longer than anticipated, missing tonight’s first Champion’s League match. Balotelli was part of the winning team of FC Inter last year, carrying the flag for Italian football, and before injuring his knee in his first Premier League match managed to score a goal, thus justifying the 23 million euros City payed to FC Internazionale for the player.

Balotelli has proved himself quite a character since moving to Manchester City and is making up for his clamorous exclusion from Italy’s national side in the 2010 World Cup. These photos show him enjoying the attention prior to his knee operation by appearing at the window of the Pavia hospital with shower cap on before then sticking his tongue out at photographers.

And frankly, we’re all lapping it up. It’s a shame that he will be out for longer than expected as we were curious to see how Italy’s latest export and famous celebrity would continue his story overseas, post FC Inter. He will be back, though, and will likely provide us with more golden moments of “I’m rich”. More after the jump on AC Milan and big money for Balotelli.

Italian football season starts with Robinho and Ibrahimovic for AC Milan

By Alison

Italian football’s Serie A championship has started with quite a tussle going on which will provide some very interesting local derbies this season between AC Milan and FC Internazionale. AC Milan has achieved a coup this season, acquiring both Zlatan Ibrahimovich and Brazilian player Robinho thus providing one of the most stunning lineups in attack of any team in Europe.

The red-and-black AC Milan side will take to the field with Ibrahimovic, Ronaldinho, Pato and Robinho up front - and the comments are that it’s a daunting thing to face across the local field of the San Siro stadium for current champions, Inter Milan. FC Internazionale itself has been criticised for not making any new purchases this year, described as having an old lineup on the field.

That said, Inter sold Ibrahimovic two years ago for 50 million euros and earned a pretty packet, with AC Milan buying him back to Italy for 24 million; and Robinho has been bought for another 16 million euros - a player who moved from Real Madrid to Manchester City with the latter club spending 42 million euros to take him on.

That’s a lot of money moving around in a couple of years and ‘Ibra’ is being described as the big hit this season in Serie A for AC Milan. With the first matches already completed, the team disposed of Lecce 4-0 with a double goal scored off the boot of Pato. And Ibrahimovic wasn’t even on the field at the time. In fact, neither was Robinho as he’s waiting for them to shuffle Boriello off to Rome before he signs his contract. Could we be looking at Italy’s new football champions for the 2010 Serie A?

FC Internazionale players sing new Pazza Inter anthem

By Alison

Milan’s FC Inter won the Serie A championship, the Coppa Italia and the European Champion’s League in 2010, making it a hugely successful season for the team, headed by coach Jose Mourinho (who now moves to Real Madrid). The Italian football season has now finished and we’ll be deprived of all that Sunday excitement until the 2010 World Cup starts.

So in the meantime, as a final celebration of an extraordinary FC Inter hat-trick this year, here is a new version of the team’s anthem “Pazza Inter”, which is apparently among the most downloaded songs in Italy recently. Check out your favourite players and their singing skills in the video above.

Mourinho for Pope: live pics from Milan and Madrid celebrate FC Inter Champion's League final

By Alison

FC Inter fans celebrate live pics Milan

It’s hard to say what 45 years of waiting to be European Champions does to people, but FC Internazionale fans had plenty of opportunity on Saturday and Sunday to celebrate the 2-0 win over Bayern. For the first time in history, Milan’s San Siro stadium was open all night long to accomodate fans waiting for the arrival of their team at 5am to celebrate the victory. It’s unlikely that the Piazza Duomo in Milan has seen such a party, either - this was bigger for the city than Italy’s 2006 World Cup Win.

In the following galleries you can see all the Champion’s League live pics from Madrid with the banners and placards from the fans, and all the
live pics from Milan celebrations at the stadium and outside the Duomo. Some of the pictures show Mourinho dressed as Pope (we think), messages to ‘traitor’ Ibraimovich, and the hysterical delirium that took over Milan on Saturday night. For more pics, videos and full coverage of the victory, see our colleagues at Calcioblog.it.

News from Italy: Fellini's feminist lovers, Colosseum restoration and papal cover-ups

By Alison

the guardian International press news from Italy includes everything from Roma’s top spot in the Serie A football list, above FC Internazionale, to the restoration of the Colosseum and papal cover-ups. Sometimes it seems the world just can’t get enough of Italy.

Among the favourite topics from Spain’s El Pais is the 23 million euros announced for the restoration of the Colosseum. Rome’s mayor, Alemanno, has approved the expensive plan and the Spaniards say it’s come in time to prevent a similar fate to that of the roof crumbling on the Domus Aurea.

The Italians call it the most ‘curious’ topic, but if you know anything about Germaine Greer’s celebrity status in the Anglo world, you won’t be surprised that the Guardian reported a supposed dalliance between the strident feminist and Federico Fellini. Another event which apparently occured in Rome, over dinner of a basil risotto.

A Telegraph columnist uses an old favourite among journalists to compare modern politics to ancient times, wandering Rome’s ruins while pondering Britain’s budget deficit:

Valentino Rossi for Italy football coach: Inter, Gli Azzurri and the 2010 World Cup

By Alison

Valentino_Rossi_Iene

After being left without petrol on his victory lap at the Qatar MotoGP, Valentino Rossi was paid a visit by Italian television’s satirical show, Le Iene, who left him with a voucher for five euros of petrol. Not content with just this gesture, however, the show also took the opportunity to ask him a couple of other questions. Like who the most annoying rider in the MotoGP is.

No prizes for guessing that would be Casey Stoner, but Rossi also discussed some current Italian football problems close to his heart. His team, FC Inter, is struggling in the championship, having just been overtaken by Roma in the points ranking, but he is focussing on Internazionale’s campaign in the Champion’s League, saying it’s more important.

In the meantime, Rossi has also left his advice regarding Italy’s strikers for the 2010 World Cup, putting Cassano, Balotelli and Miccoli up front. When he knocks off from racing, we’re thinking sidekick to Italy’s national football coach wouldn’t be a bad job for the world MotoGP champion.

Internazionale vs Juventus 2-1: Inter Milan in Coppa Italia semi-final

By Alison

Here are highlights from the Juventus-Inter Milan game that took place last week, ending in a 2-1 victory to Internazionale as it passes to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia. Juventus is in struggling form at the moment, and whether the move to appoint new Juventus coach Alberto Zaccheroni will make any difference, will only be seen later in the season. He has a contract until June 30 to turn around the fortunes of Juventus.

Internazionale is looking very strong again this season, with Balotelli closing the match with the final goal. The real difference for the side is in their secret weapon of Milito, originally assigned to the bench but entering the match in the second half to bring the blue-black team home. See the highlights from the match in the video above.

Italian football local derby: FC Internazionale vs AC Milan highlights

By Alison

The mecca of Milanese football, San Siro stadium, was privy to an exciting local derby football match yesterday, with the blue and black (Nerazzurri) FC Inter Milan battling it out with AC Milan. Top of the table Inter managed to win 2-0 in a score that doesn’t reflect the many shots they had on goal. AC Milan blew a consolation prize chance with a penalty goal saved by the Inter Milan keeper, in a general display of excellent goal keeping from both sides.

In the video above you can see some of the action from the San Siro stands with Inter fans in the northern stand (Curva Nord), and AC Milan fans at the opposite, Curva Sud. After the jump you’ll find all the highlights from the game, including Inter’s two goals from Milito and Pandev, a red card to Sneijder and AC Milan’s subsequent penalty shot miss from none other than Ronaldinho.
