The names of international and Italian celebrities make a small list in the break up of George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis. Around the story is Christian Vieri, showgirl Belen Rodriguez and Italy’s favourite gay television star and Chi magazine director, Alfonso Signorini.
The latter was working with Elisabetta Canalis on Italian television when the break-up occurred and tells his side of the story of what happened two days ago. Interviewed in the Italian press, Signorini was asked:
Was everything going well?
Yes, I’m astonished. The news is a surprise even for me.
Tell us what happened.
In a recent interview on Italian television, Elisabetta Canalis “revealed” that she’s not marrying high profile boyfriend George Clooney. The Italian showgirl did a very good PR job for herself, while host Fabio Fazio didn’t ask too many hairy questions, and said that the Clooney-Canalis relationship has no marriage plans as yet.
Elisabetta Canalis has been one of Italy’s favourite show girls and celebrities for years, and since she started going out with Italy’s favourite adopted celebrity, George Clooney, there has been nothing but pressure and speculation over if or when we’d be hearing wedding bells. Canalis’ career has got a boost, both in America and in Italy, since her high-profile relationship started.
Canalis will co-host the next San Remo festival with Belen Rodriguez, after appearing in the Italian cinema Christmas movie A natale mi sposo. That’s after appearances in America in the television series Leverage and plenty of star guest appearances on Italian television after a job as one of the Veline launched her career. It was on her upcoming film, where Canalis plays a wedding planner, that host Fabio teased her a little but clearly she has learned to take things in an ironic spirit and brushed off the comment. As if it were just her decision, though, Canalis says: “For the moment, I’m not going to get married.”
If you hadn’t already guessed it, gossip from Italy and much of the Italian public in general is obsessed with the George Clooney-Elisabetta Canalis relationship and many Italians have been holding their breath over whether the couple will get married or not. If that day ever actually arrives, you can rest assured it will be the biggest event in Italy this side of the year 2000.
Other Italian celebrities may be feeling a little neglected as Elisabetta Canalis takes the limelight off the back of her famous husband. This time round, the favourite title for the gossip pages is ‘Canalis is getting married’ but it’s not for real. The Italian showgirl is to appear in the film A natale mi sposo (At Christmas I’ll get married), directed by Paolo Costella and starring veteran Massimo Boldi.
The film is another example of the trashy ‘cinepanettone‘ version of Italian cinema we’ll be seeing come Christmas, but by that stage we’ll probably be ready for some light-hearted escapism. In the meantime, it looks like the only real moment when Elisabetta Canalis will be donning a wedding dress anytime soon.
Elisabetta Canalis‘ marriage ultimatum to George Clooney is probably the one card she should never have played. That is, if her ultimatum actually occurred, although the National Enquirer reports that it has according to a ‘friend’. The rumours on the Clooney-Canalis relationship go like this:
“George prizes his bachelorhood like it’s all the gold in Fort Knox, but that’s got to change if he wants to keep Elisabetta,” a friend told the Enquirer. “She told him she wants ‘a promise’ that they will marry and have a future together.”
George and Eli have been dating for nearly 14 months, and Eli recently made it clear she’s not going to wait much longer for a husband and a family, disclosed the pal.
More after the jump….
News from Italy is that George Clooney has sold his Lake Como villa - Villa Oleandra - and to who? No-one famous or interesting, no Russian oligarchs or eastern princesses, but an unknown industrial family from the Brianza (lucky them!). Unless you’re in the know in the textiles industry and the Besana name means anything to you (apparently they are European leaders in producing towelling).
We were hoping for something juicier than this but there you have it. The figure, however, is quite astonishing with the Clooney villa sale apparently going for about 30 million euros. That figure would include Villa Oleandra, the Villa Margherita guest house and obviously the rest of the facilities including the park, swimming pool, sauna, basketball court and cinema with production room facilities.
The reports have not been confirmed as such so we can take them as rumours at this stage but the Italians are truly concerned about the possible departure of George Clooney from the shores of their lake. Apparently even the mayor of the town Laglio has written a letter to Clooney asking him to reconsider. The only hope left is that the Hollywood gentleman changes his mind based on nostalgia. Read on for more!
Here are our first pics of George Clooney and his Italian showgirl-girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis, on the red carpet at the 2010 Oscars. I don’t know the designer of Canalis’ dress (the clutch bag is Ferragamo), but I’ve seen better on her - it’s slightly ill-fitting to my eye. Even the recycled dress at the Venice film festival did more for her. We’ll have to wait for more news to emerge to see whether Italy’s favourite celebrity couple was hit at the world’s biggest red carpet event, but as we had already said - if you had a hand bag this good looking, wouldn’t you take her to the Oscars, too? George Clooney had been nominated for best actor for the film Up in the Air. (P.S Is it just me or does George need a hair cut?)
Update: Elisabetta Canalis wears a Roberto Cavalli dress.

Mexico has become a favourite destination for George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis, with the former Italian show girl snapped once again in bikini, this time together with George. It’s a bit weird seeing him with a beard, all of sudden reminding us of the age difference between the two, but they both look to be in fine form. The Clooney-Canalis saga is the hottest gossip from Italy this year, and we figure the speculation over whether Clooney will take his Italian girlfriend to the Oscars is nothing no-one who’s not called Sherlock couldn’t figure out. If you were a man who had Canalis on your arm, wouldn’t you take the umpteenth red carpet opportunity to show her off…?
While the international audience wants to know who Elisabetta Canalis is, the Italians are asking themselves how she ever ended up with George Clooney. The conclusion is that on the arm of Clooney will be the only way Elisabetta ever gets anywhere near the red carpet of the Oscars, and frankly if Clooney’s taken her everywhere else there’s no reason to think that he won’t take her to the Oscars as well (red carpet Venice, then red carpet London, the red carpet in Rome etc).
The Clooney-Canalis couple has had the Hollywood stars blinded by Canalis’ good looks and supposed charm, and the Italians obssessing over their favourite resident actor with a loved or hated Italian show girl, depending on which camp you’re in. In the biggest gossip from Italy for 2009, there’s an opinion that Elisabetta Canalis is not quite the girl you’d expect Clooney to fall in love with; being a reflection on her and not on him of course, as many a fan around the world would never admit to faults in the man himself.
The Italians are not very charitable towards the lady in question, falling just short of vitriol that we can only imagine George Clooney is ignoring. And perhaps one commenter has hit the nail on the head in saying that she could be the accessory for Clooney’s mid life crisis, with another adding “You’ll see that Elisabetta Canalis, like any self-respecting overpaid luxury escort, will accompany the lovely George down the Red Carpet. What suburban tart would let go of an opportunity for so much publicity?”

Elisabetta Canalis has had a triumphant entry to Hollywood with George Clooney for the Unicef ball at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The ball is one of the more illustrious events on the Hollywood calendar and other celebrities in attendance were Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, on the same table as the Clooney-Canalis couple.
Matt Damon and his wife, Luciana Barroso were also there, as was Bruce Willis, Cindy Crawford and their respective partners in what seemed to be a re-run of Ocean’s Twelve. According to reports, George Clooney is as attentive as ever to his Italian girlfriend and Elisabetta seems to be able to mix it with the stars. It looks like her Italian show girl training is standing her in good stead, so far.
People magazine said of the Clooney-Canalis romance:
Canalis appeared right at home among Clooney’s high-profile pals, chit-chatting with Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber, and never straying far from her beau, who kept her the center of his attention.
Throughout the evening, the couple never skimped on public displays of affection: He draped his around the back of her chair and she ran her fingers through his hair during musical performances from Tony Bennett and Frankie Valli. Clooney constantly turned to her to share big laughs during the event’s funnier moments….”
The US has finally caught on to the Clooney-Canalis love story and these sexy pics of Elisabetta Canalis for Maxim USA show that the Americans appreciate the Italian show girl - at least for her hot looks.
According to reports, answering questions about love, Elisabetta Canalis has stated: “I used to play around a lot more in love, nowadays I don’t want to waste anymore time in bad relationships.” Has she got the tick of approval from the American public? Time will tell.
