Parco Sigurtà

If you have a passion for gardens and parks, you must absolutely pay a visit to the enchanting Parco di Sigurtà on the shores of Lake Garda which is just a stone’s throw away from Milan; with its hundred varieties of shrubs, flowers and trees, the Sigurtà park is a true corner of paradise for nature-lovers and gardeners. Tulips, Irises, roses and water-lilies which fill the air with the sweetest fragrances one can imagine. Established in the 17th century, the 600,000 square metre park is considered by many as one of the most beautiful gardens/parks in the world.

Day trip from Milan: Tignale, lake Garda

By Giorgio

Tignale

During the hot months of summer, Lake Garda is usually assaulted by thousands of people looking for fresh air and in the mood for swimming in the lake , but if you, like me, don’t like overcrowded beaches and just want to chill out and enjoy the panorama, the small village of Tignale is the place to be. Located on a plateau which dominates the lake, Tignale has plenty to offer; from the church of Madonna di Monte Castello built in the 13th century to an immense and luxuriant park where one can take long walks, enjoy breathtaking views over the lake and have a hearty meal at some local trattoria.

Italy's most beautiful parks

By Giorgio

oasi di ninfa

We don’t know yet which Italian park will win the contest Il Parco più bello d’ Italia or Italy’s most beautiful park; there are so many contenders that is almost impossible to tell which one will prevail and win; the favourites include the amazing Venaria Reale near Turin, Racconigi Castle ( always in Piedmont) which I had the pleasure to visit only a few months ago, the famous Miramare castle in Trieste and the Vittoriale, the rather bizarre villa on Lake Garda where Italian writer Gabriele D’Annunzio lived and died. So if you are curious to know which one will sit atop the list, stay tuned!

Nerocubo hotel

Not from Lake Garda and the city of Trento, there’s a new design hotel called Nerocubo. All rooms have a modern interior and feature contemporary artworks by young and talented artists from all over the world, Italy included. The chief attraction of this four star hotel is the wellness suite on 8th floor (the view over the Vallagarina Valley and the Adige river is simply amazing) where guests can kick back and have a series of state of the art treatments without having to leave their room. On the same floor there’s another wellness centre open to all guests and which offers Turkish bath, sauna, emotional showers and herbal teas. gds

One of the loveliest surprises for the coming Christmas season is that from 5 December to 5 January 2010, the historic fortress of Rocca di Riva on Lake Garda will open its doors to all those children who wish to visit Santa Claus’ s Italian home ( the entrance is free); the legend has it that every year during the long cold winter months Santa leaves the Nord for this old fortress where helped by elves, he makes toys and Christmas presents for Italian children. Food festivals and Italian olive oil: Lake Garda olives

By Alison

gds

The best Italian olive oil does not just come from central and southern Italy. While you may be used to seeing the olive groves across the hills of Tuscany and Umbria, there is a pocket in northern Italy that makes excellent olive oil, too. We’ve already see the limoncello from Lake Garda, and today we take a look at another Italian food festival, with the lake’s olive oil production.

The Lake Garda olive oil festival is taking place, called “L’olio, il lago e la tradizione”, which celebrates the olive oil making tradition and industry of the lake. The festival features the oil of Castelletto di Brenzone and involves tours of the olive groves and olive pressing facilities, concluding on November 25th with olive oil tastings and an olive race for children. For more information, see the olive oil event brochure.

How to make homemade limoncello

By Alison

ricetta limoncello Limoncello is a classic Italian liqueur used for an afterdinner “digestivo” or “amaro” and you can find it just about everywhere. Homemade limoncello is probably totally illegal in the country where I come from, although some Italian migrants still manage. In Italy, there are both commercial and homemade limoncello versions, some of the best of which come from southern Italy, particularly Sorrento and from the north on Lake Garda, the limoncello from the town of Limone.

The classic recipe is basically lemons, pure alcohol and sugar. There is also a cream version which, while still served cold or frozen, is still a lovely creamy after dinner drink. Here, we give you a different version, which is made from vodka and will make it easier if you can’t buy pure drinking alcohol without getting yourself arrested.

Ingredients: ten lemons, one litre of vodka and 350 grams of sugar. All you have to do is grate the lemon rind and place it in a jar or caraffe large enough to contain the vodka as well. Pour in the vodka and wait!

Italian Festivals: Sagra dei osei at Cisano di Bardolino, Verona

By Giorgio

gds

One of the oldest festivals around the city of Verona is dedicated to a local delicacy: bird roast. The festival takes place on 8th September in the small town of Cisano di Bardolino on Lake Garda where hunters have been meeting for more than a hundred years on some occasions to see bird exhibitions; on others to taste bird-based dishes or to hunt with decoys. Back then the place was a renowned haunt of hunters, but now things have changed for good and thanks to a rich and interesting programme , the festival (which is called “ Sagra degli Osei or birds”) every year succeeds in drawing many visitors from a wide diversity of backgrounds.

Sailing and hiking at Italy's Lake Garda

By Alison

Lago di Garda

Italy’s Lake Garda is an impressive expanse of water, with its southern end similar to a wide flat lake, while the northern tip resembles more an alpine lake, with darker blue waters.

It is truly beautiful and worth a visit especially for lovers of windsurfing and sailing in Italy. The surrounding landscape also affords wonderful views if you’re not into watersports and prefer trekking or hiking.

An example of a Lake Garda itinerary is the town of Gargnano with its port, Marina di Bogliaco, already well known to the sailers from Y&S. It is possible to choose various sailing options and hiking tracks of only a few hours, that will lead you to places such as the St Valentine’s retreat and Castello di Gaino. In the gallery are some photos and the map of the track, while you can follow the above links for more information.

The vintage car event will take place from April 16 to 19 between Lake Garda and Mantova.

If you want to snowboard in Italy, the Italian ski resort of Brentonico Ski has a Double Park snowboard area dedicated to fans of the “table” (”la tavola” in Italian is sometimes used to mean snowboard).

The Bretonico Ski area overlooks Lake Garda, and the Double Park complex is 900 metres long and 80 metres wide, with lights for night snowboarding. On the Snow Gang site, it is reported that the park was opened a year ago and includes five kickers, eight rails and boxes, a chillout zone, music and a four seater chairlift. The advanced line includes tabletop and picnic table, six metre boxes, a five-metre flat jump and the SuperFunBox with rails. Other equipment includes step ups, straight rails, six metre down slope rails, kinkboxes and a double kick table top. At the bottom of the park you can find a street rail single tube 30 metres long.
