Eating out in Rome: Ivo in the Trastevere district

By Giorgio

The world is changing and changing fast - so even here in Rome to find an old trattoria where one can relax and eat hearty meals in a warm and cosy atmosphere is becoming harder and harder. Anyway the old inn Ivo is doing its best to keep the old traditions going, so if you love true Roman dishes this is the place to be. Their menu includes pizza, but if I were you I would rather focus on such delicious dishes as aubergine balls, potato crocchette, cod fillets and fritto misto! The only drawback is that the place is so popular that sometimes you have to wait in line for a table!

Rome on a budget: all-you-can-eat restaurants in Rome with set prices

By Alison

ristorante Cheap eats in Rome can be found, you’ve just got to know where to look. Rome nightlife is full of fantastic restaurants and bars if you’re furnished with a little local knowledge, and we’ve just discovered an all-you-can-eat beer bar right in the middle of the Trastevere district.

For a fixed price you can eat at the Trilussa birreria in via Benedetta - 15 euros will get you the non stop menu. Make sure you bring hungry friends because the first courses are fantastic and this is all about eating what’s in front of you. If you can’t manage, pass it to someone else in the group.

If you’re looking for something more traditionally Italian, other Rome restaurants have pizza with a set price and all the beer you want. In San Lorenzo you’ll find Mamarò where ten euros will get you all the pizza and beer you want, and the same goes for Giubileo in via Palermo, Monti area with pizza at ten euros and pasta at 15 euros.

Other options for eating lots and spending little in Rome are at Olio, sale e pepe in via D. Da Empoli 15, and Pizzamia in viale Tirreno 67. If you’re a bit out of town, at Castel di leva there’s Merlo parlante in via F.Cassitto 45 which also has fixed price dinner deals.

Rome by horse and carriage: new rules protect horses' wellbeing

By Alison

Being romantic in Rome could involve a horse and carriage ride around the city, but these days you’ll find your driver is more restricted in where he can and can’t go. The tradition of horses in Rome and their carriages called “botticelle” dates back to the days when they were used for the transport of wine barrells throughout the city. The barrells are known as ‘botti’, and the carriages get their name from this very purpose. After a battle has been waged between environmentalists and the tourism board, new rules now govern the use of the horse and carriage for tourists wanting to tour Rome.

Horse and carriage owners must now include a numberplate on the vehicles, and must not travel streets that are too steep to avoid the horses getting tired. The animals are not supposed to work more than eight hours a day. The university of La Sapienza is even studying the possibility of using a kind of electric cart which would be lighter and easier to drive.

The “botticelle” can only travel the pedestrian zones of the city centre, and the tourist districts of Trastevere, Testaccio and villa Borghese, with a few more streets exempt from the absence of horses: via Vittorio Veneto, viale Trastevere, piazza della Repubblica, via della Consolazione, via dei Fori Imperiali and via Petroselli. Other streets have seen horse and carriage traffic banned, included via Barberini, Crispi, Quattro Fontane, della Dataria, salita Del Grillo, via Panisperna and via San Sebastianello.

In addition to this, horse and carriage drivers have been offered the opportunity to swap their licence for a taxi driver’s licence. If that is a more convenient option, we could see the possibility of touring Rome by horse and carriage disappear. In the words of Lando Fiorini, protesting the move: “Let’s keep them [the horses]. They’re part of tradition - let’s ban the cars instead, maybe.”

Driving in Italy: parking in Rome pisses some people off

By Alison

Cartello anti parcheggio Ivano

For the Italian language, or Italian English, we’ve already seen the creative and sparky side of the Romans come out with their “clients gentilefunny photo. Here we have another example, but for something far more serious - parking in Rome. While driving in Italy is bad enough, parking is even worse.

This sign is a true example of Italian genius - a work of art in how to get your point across, finally. The creator of the sign is a shop owner in Rome who was tired of people parking across his shop entrance in Trastevere. This picture has become famous, travelling the web and finishing in newspapers and on t-shirts.

The English part, you guys can happily read. For the Italian part the translation would go something like this:

For everyone else you have really pissed me off. Sunday open.

Only that the “pissed off” bit is far far more vulgar in Italian. We’ll explain another time, but for other examples of Italian swearing, see our introductory video. In the meantime Ivano has kept his sign, this time on the inside of his shop but is thinking of putting it up for auction. We get the feeling he may have more than one interested purchaser!

Ivano, owner and creator of Italy’s famous sign

Ivano, il creatore.

Discovering Rome and its hidden treasures: Excubitorium in the Trastevere district

By Giorgio

Excubitorium_VII-coorte-dei-Vigili_trastevere_Sotterranea_Roma_Nascosta

Today I’m going to take you on a rather fascinating journey eight metres below street level; down there we’ll in fact find the famous Excubitorium which in ancient times was a guardhouse; actually back then the soldiers who patrolled the area also served as firefighters. These Cortes Vigilium were founded by the Emperor Augustus in 6th A.D, but the Excubitorium complex as it is now known was brought back to life only during a series of excavations which took place in the Trastevere district between 1865 and 1866. Sadly enough, for many years nobody paid attention to it, so many of its frescoes and works of art went down the drain! But thank heaven all buildings were restored in 1986 and people can now have the unique opportunity to visit the place and take a symbolical dive into roman history.

All visits should be booked in advance. They usually take place on Saturdays around 15:00; prices range from 6,00 to 2,00 euros!

Restaurants in Rome: the Enoteca Ferrara in Trastevere

By Alison

Famous among wine lovers, the Enoteca Ferrara is also strongly recommended by wine professionals as a place for great wine tasting in Rome, while also being one of Rome’s restaurants worth visiting. The bar is located in the Trastevere district of Rome and has an excellent offering from both the cellar and the kitchen. It was voted best wine bar in Italy in 2003.

For starters, Enoteca Ferrara offers an aperitif in its lounge area. Available are dishes such as chicken liver pate with cherry tomatoes, bread cubes with mini meat balls, potato and octopus salad or seafood salad.

The rest of the bar is a series of different rooms that form part of a building that was built a couple of centuries ago. The tables are pleasingly spaced apart, with chic decorations that aren’t too exaggerated. The armchairs are comfortable and the staff afford exceptional service.

Vacation in Rome: Trilussa Palace Hotel Rome

By Julia

Roof garden del Trilussa

The Trilussa Palace Hotel Congress & SPA,in Rome, is a modern structure situated in the center of the city, on Viale Trastevere. The location is the real prize of this four-star hotel, seeing as you find yourself practically at Porta Portese, where the most traditional of the Roman Sunday markets takes place, one kilometer from Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, and less than two kilometers from Campo de Fiori, Piazza Navona, the Colosseum and the Pantheon. For travellers arriving at the Roma Trastevere train, the hotel is just a five minute walk away.

The rooms are decorated in the style of Louis XVI, with coordinated parquet and tapestries. Additionally, the rooms also feature Internet connectivity, satellite TV, minibar and safe. The bathrooms are complete with showers with a jacuzzi and marble floors. The hotel offers numerous services, but the most noted in the guest comments is the roof garden, where one can relax after hiking through the streets of Rome, enjoying a splendid view across the rooftops of the city. The only downsides are the lack of restaurant inside the hotel and the look and feel of the building facade.

As of now, it is possible to reserve for weekends and enjoy a price discount for the period. For example for the weekend of June 12-14, two people in a double standard room would spend 280 euros, instead of the listed 400 euros. Included would be parking in the garage (which one would normally have to pay for), one entrance for the hotel gym, one hour of internet use, and one coupon for a 10% discount on massages, the health spa, the minibar, and products in the boutique. A family of four in the Junior Suite would pay just 406 euros instead of the listed price of 580.

Rome restaurants: Pancotto in Trastevere district

By Alison

The Trastevere district in Rome has a lot to offer, including some of Rome’s best restaurants and night life, and having a bite to eat at night can be essential in this area. The Pancotto pizzeria and restaurant is a good place to stop, with tables outside (on the footpath, it must be understood).

Pancotto is in Piazza Sonnino, and is a restaurant serving traditional dishes from Rome and Italy, with a mix of meat and fish. The menu includes dishes such as spaghetti with clams and artichoke, ricotta, polenta and stew and many others. The pizza is done in Roman style with a very thin crust and classic toppings.

If you’re in the know, you get complimentary bruschetta, and you could follow with an antipasto of mixed fried snacks or aubergine rolls. The pizza is tasty and slightly smaller which is good news for those not used to the Italian tradition of a pizza per head. For dessert, go for the fresh fruit of pineapple and strawberries with cream. Pancotto is in Viale Trastevere 8/14.

Restaurants in Rome: "Vacanze Romane" in Trastevere

By Alison

A cosy and unpretentious restaurant worth visiting in Rome, is “Vacanze Romane” in the Trastevere district. And if you’re on a romantic holiday in Rome, it’s the perfect start to an evening strolling the lovely streets of this area.

The interior ambience has an open, American style kitchen, divided into a vegetarian section and the rest with meat and fish dishes. There used to be a kind of organic cultural-restaurant here called Sai Baba and so some elements have been preserved.

Around the walls there are posters from the films of William Wyler, and the staff are friendly enough with the owner having that Roman home-style that you can find only in Trastevere.

For antipasti, you can try asparagus with truffle sauce and shaved parmesan cheese. Following that, the risotto “alla trevigiana” or chicory risotto, is very good, as is the mixed vegetable dish, or home-made pasta. Following that, a classic sliced beef or “tagliata” with balsamic vinegar can be shared among the group. The desserts offer classic tiramisù, or zabaglione with chocolate. Prices are normal. The restaurant is in Via Bargoni 10, in Trastevere, phone: 065898154, or email info@vacanzeromane.com

Rome: four star Hotel Donna Camilla Savelli

By Giorgio

The Donna Savelli hotel was an old convent built in 1642 by the illustrious architect Francesco Borromini for Camilla Savelli Farnese duchess of Latera. After major restoration, this beautiful nunnery has been converted into a four star hotel for the famous Alpitour World group. It has 78 bedrooms including an Imperial Suite that will take your breath away; the price ranges from 250 to 650 euros per night.

Every room features wooden beams and antique furniture, but perhaps the hotel’s chief attraction lies in its amazing roof garden which features an old cloister surrounded by beautiful magnolias and which provides one of the most beautiful views in the world: the pulsating heart of Rome. By the way, the hotel is located in the Trastevere District, so Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori or Vatican City are just a few minutes away; no need to take a taxi or the subway train!

Take a look at our photo gallery.
