George Clooney to marry Elisabetta Canalis?!

By Alison in: Movies: actors and actresses People

George Clooney Elisabetta Canalis at Venice film festival

As the next red carpet public appearance of George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis approaches, more rumours that Clooney and Canalis will wed have appeared. In gossip from Italy, Clooney has apparently said that while this is not the time or place to go making announcements, he would be happy to get married, “even tonight”.

While I suspect it’s partly a tongue-in-cheek comment where Clooney is enjoying stirring up the media (any chance you can get), it would seem to indicate his happiness with his lady choice of the moment, Elisabetta Canalis.

In the interview with Tu Style magazine, however, Clooney goes on to talk about his work on television, how he got lucky in life with his acting, and how everything can be reduced to chance (encouraging words for the struggling actors out there). We wonder though, after declarations such as these, whether it won’t be Elisabetta Canalis who first reveals her hand.

Italy's Flavio Briatore quits Renault

By Alison in: News People

Flavio Briatore and Elisabetta Gregoraci in bikini

In the wake of the Nelson Piquet Junior Formula 1 crash scandal, Italian millionaire Flavio Briatore has quit his role of Managing Director of Renault’s Formula One team. The team has decided not to dispute claims that it ordered Piquet to crash his car deliberately, so that his teammate Fernando Alonso could win the 2008 Singapore Formula One race.

Flavio Briatore is a classic middle age millionaire with a trophy wife, Italian show girl Elisabetta Gregoraci. The couple got married last year in an expensive Italian wedding in Rome. In a little celebrity gossip, Briatore’s former lover Naomi Campbell, was not invited to the ceremony.

This year it seems the Italian celebrity has had a busy summer, holidaying on his luxury yacht off the coast of Sardinia, and attending the Venice film festival. Oh, and pretending the Renault Formula 1 crash scandal would leave him unscathed.

Juliet's balcony for weddings in Verona

By Alison in: Veneto Literature Festivals

GDS

We’ve already looked at news on weddings in Verona and getting married at the house of Juliet, but Verona’s council has now taken its initiative a step further. Apparently the famous Juliet’s balcony will soon be open to weddings and other events.

Having become a place of pilgrimage over the years, we can only imagine that a wedding in Italy on Juliet’s balcony costs plenty. Apparently, Verona is looking to become a world wedding site, with the aim, in time, of reaching the wedding industry heights of Las Vegas.

Demographics manager with Verona council, Daniele Polato, has said that there is nothing wrong or anti-historic in looking to promote tourism in the city. A complete package of a Juliet wedding in Verona is being studied costing 800 euros for Italians and 1000 euros, or 1,300 dollars, for foreigners.

Getting married in Italy: weddings in Verona at the house of Juliet

By Alison in: Veneto Festivals

casa giulietta e romeo verona

One of Italy’s most romantic cities, Verona, is fast becoming a very fashionable destination for a wedding in Italy. Following in the steps of one of literature’s most famous couples, Romeo and Juliet, you can get married at the house of Juliet in Verona.

While I’ve never understood the romance, seeing the depressing fate of the star-crossed lovers, the cost of the wedding might make you think twice, too. Citizens from Verona pay about 600 euros for the privilege of getting married at Palazzo Cappello, other Italian citizens pay 800 euros, and overseas visitors pay about 1,000 euros.

Apparently the difference in price for Italians and foreigners is established to cover the costs of additional bureaucracy; whatever the case it is certainly quite a business. Will I be the one to mention that Verona’s council, given the going prices of weddings these days, could charge even more…? For more information on weddings in Verona, see cittaverona.it, also in English.

Weddings in Italy: traditional marriage in Santadi, Sardinia with the "Matrimonio Mauritano"

By Alison in: Sardinia

Matrimonio mauritanio
If you’re planning on getting married in Italy, you might want to see how it was done in the good old days in Sardinia. On August 3, in Santadi, a traditional “Matrimonio Mauritano” will take place.

In such a marriage, the bride must wear the following dress:

The day of the wedding the brid will wear a pleated skirt (”su manteu”), a small jacket (”su gipponi”), a handkerchief folded across the chest (”sa perr’e sera”), a tunic (”su ventalicciu”), and a veil made from very light wool (”su pannicciu e coroi”) or a cloth with floral design (”su macaroi mannu”) or a shawl with silk embroidery (”su sciallinu i sera”).

The small town in the south-east of Sardinia will organise the wedding, which is celebrated the first Sunday of August. The name “Matrimonio Mauritanio” evokes the old immigration of people from North Africa to the island. The ritual is a country rite that involves other traditions, for examples mothers breaking a symbolic plate.

The 2008 edition will have an ethnic concert in the square on the Saturday before at 10pm, with the following day seeing a procession at 9:30, with mass celebrated at about midday. For more information go to the Sardegna Turismo site, the Santadi council site, and the Sardinian wedding show site.
